ZIP Extractor Online: Open and unzip files in your browser.

Open a ZIP file to see what's inside. Preview text files and images, then extract the files you need or the entire archive. The ZIP file is read and unpacked on your device, so nothing is uploaded, and you don't need to sign up. Each file is checked against its stored checksum. You can then save your selection as a new ZIP file or write it straight to a folder.

ZIP Extractor Guide: Open, preview, and unzip files online.

Learn how to open a ZIP file, select the necessary files, and safely extract them. This tutorial provides a clear explanation of the tool's capabilities.

A simple explanation

What Is a ZIP Extractor, and When Do You Need One?

A ZIP extractor opens a ZIP archive and allows you to extract files from it. A ZIP file combines multiple files and folders into one compressed file, making it smaller and easier to send.

Most computers can unzip files, but not always in the place you are working, such as a locked-down work laptop, a shared computer or a phone. This extractor works in any modern browser, shows what is inside before you unpack anything, and lets you take only the files you need. If you work with text files that came out of an archive, the Word Counter and the Text Diff Checker make a useful next step.

Common reasons to unzip

Why People Extract ZIP Files Online

Archives arrive as email attachments, downloads, exports, and backups. This is where a browser-based extractor is most helpful.

Downloads and attachments

Open a ZIP file from an email or website and extract the document or photo you need without unpacking the rest.

Private files

You can check the contents of a sensitive archive without uploading it to a server because the work happens on your device.

Office files and exports

DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, and EPUB files are also ZIP archives, so you can view the images and XML within them.

Under the hood

How the Extractor Reads a ZIP File

A ZIP file ends with a directory that lists every file, its size, its checksum, and the location of its data. The extractor reads this directory first, so a large archive can be listed in a moment without being unpacked.

When you preview or download a file, only that file’s data is read and decompressed using the browser’s built-in Deflate support. Then, a CRC-32 checksum is calculated and compared with the stored value so that you know the file is intact. Nothing is sent over the network.

Tips for Extracting ZIP Files Safely

  • Only open archives from trusted sources and scan the extracted programs before running them.
  • Use the filter box on large archives, and then select "All" to choose everything that matches.
  • If a file shows that an integrity check failed, download the ZIP file again, as it may have been cut off.
  • Select "Save to Folder" when you want to keep the folders as they are. Other browsers can use the "Download as ZIP" option.
  • To check what changed between two extracted text files, use the Text Diff Checker.

Limitations and Privacy

Privacy

Everything happens locally in your browser. Neither the ZIP file nor the files inside it are uploaded, sent to a server, or stored. They disappear when you close or refresh the page.

Limitations

Password-protected files and files compressed using rare methods cannot be extracted. Very large archives depend on the memory of your device, and a new ZIP file created from a selection is limited to about 1.5 GB. Previews are available for text files and common image types.

Common questions

ZIP Extractor FAQ

How do I extract a ZIP file online?

Either drop your ZIP file onto the box or click it to browse. The tool will list every file inside. You can download a single file, select several files and choose Download as ZIP, or use Save to Folder in Chrome and Edge to unpack everything with its folder structure.

Is my ZIP file uploaded to a server?

No, the archive is read and unpacked in your browser using JavaScript. Since your files never leave your device, the tool is suitable for private documents. Closing or refreshing the page clears everything.

Is it possible to extract a password-protected ZIP file?

Not yet. Password-protected files (using ZipCrypto or AES encryption) are marked "Password" in the list and cannot be opened here. However, you can open unprotected files in the same archive, as well as protected archives with a desktop program such as 7-Zip.

How can I extract only certain files from a ZIP archive?

Check the boxes next to the files you want, or use the search box to filter by name. Then, select "Select all." Then, choose "Download as ZIP" to download just those files, or "Save to Folder" to save them to a folder on your device.

Can I open RAR, 7z or TAR files?

No, this tool is designed for ZIP files and those that use the format, such as JAR, APK, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, EPUB, and ODT. Different tools are needed for RAR, 7z, and TAR archives.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no fixed limit, but the browser operates within your device's memory. Archives of several hundred megabytes typically open without issue because only the extracted file is unpacked. However, downloading a selection as one ZIP file is capped at about 1.5 GB.

What does the integrity check mean?

Each file in a ZIP archive contains a CRC-32 checksum. After extracting a file, the tool recalculates the checksum and compares it to the original. If the data matches what was stored, the result is a pass; if not, the archive may be damaged or incomplete, resulting in a fail.

Why do some file names look wrong?

Older ZIP programs save names using a local code page instead of Unicode. The tool correctly reads UTF-8 names and uses a Western European code page for others. Therefore, names with unusual accented or non-Latin letters from old archives may appear garbled.

Does the ZIP extractor work on a phone?

Yes, on modern phone browsers. Open the page, select the ZIP file from your files, and download the necessary files. The "Save to folder" option is only offered where the browser supports it, mainly on desktop Chrome and Edge.

Which compression methods are supported?

The stored files and Deflate method cover almost every ZIP file used in everyday life, including Zip64 archives over 4 GB. The list includes rare methods such as Deflate64, BZIP2, LZMA, and Zstandard, but they cannot be extracted.
